What an estate agent does
An estate agent markets and sells a home on the owner’s behalf, from the first valuation to an agreed sale. The legal transfer itself is handled by solicitors or licensed conveyancers.

- Photography, floor plans and listings on the major portals
- Arranging and conducting viewings
- Negotiating offers and checking a buyer’s position
- Progressing the sale between buyers, sellers, conveyancers and lenders
Choosing an agent
Ask two or three agents to value your home and to show the sold prices behind their figure. A high valuation is not the same as a high sale price.
Compare the fee, the contract length and any tie-in period, and whether you are signing a sole agency or multi-agency agreement. Estate agents in England and Wales must belong to a government-approved redress scheme, so ask which one.

How do I find estate agents near me?

How should I compare providers?
Look at the services each one specialises in, check any professional registration that applies, and read independent reviews. Then contact two or three directly and compare their answers, fees and how quickly they respond.
Does it cost anything to use the directory?
No. Searching and contacting businesses is free. Any fees are agreed directly between you and the provider you choose.
How do I add my business?
Use the List Your Business page to send us your details. Once reviewed, your profile appears in the relevant directory and in location searches.
