Renewable Energy at Home
Heat pumps, solar panels, batteries and EV chargers: how they work and how to choose an installer.

Renewable technologies can cut your bills and your reliance on fossil fuels. The right mix depends on your home, how well it is insulated and how you use energy.
Heat pumps
Air source and ground source heat pumps move heat from outside into your home and can replace a gas or oil boiler. They work best in well-insulated homes with suitably sized radiators or underfloor heating. Grants have been available towards the cost.
Solar panels and batteries
Solar PV panels generate electricity from daylight. A battery stores surplus power for the evening. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, larger energy suppliers must offer to pay for electricity you export to the grid, so compare their export tariffs.
Electric vehicle chargers
A home charger is faster and safer than a domestic socket. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and you may need permission from your landlord or freeholder if you do not own the property outright.
Choosing an installer
- MCS certification, needed for most grants and export payments
- TrustMark registration and membership of a consumer code such as RECC or HIES
- A clear quote, guarantees and warranties in writing
- Experience with homes like yours
