Greener Living at Home
Simple changes to save energy, water and waste, and how to spot genuine green claims.

Not every improvement needs a builder. Day-to-day choices about energy, water, waste and the products you buy all add up.
Simple steps
- Turn the boiler flow temperature down and use heating controls well
- Draught-proof doors, windows and unused chimneys
- Fit a water butt and use low-flow taps and shower heads
- Compost kitchen and garden waste, and follow your council’s recycling rules
- Plant for wildlife with native species
Spotting genuine green claims
Look for specific, checkable claims and recognised certifications, such as FSC, the Soil Association or Fairtrade, rather than vague words like “eco” or “natural”. The Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code sets out what businesses must do to make environmental claims fairly.
